Scoliosis Screenings
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. The screening is a simple observation test where a health care professional assesses a child's posture and symmetry while the child is bending forward. MedlinePlus has published an informative article at https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/001241.htm.
Florida Statute 1003.22 and Florida Administrative Code 64F-6.003 require the screening of sixth grade students for scoliosis. F.S. 1003.22 requires schools to establish and enforce policies that require scoliosis screenings, and F.A.C. 64F-6.003 states that scoliosis screenings are provided to students in grade 6.
Documenting Scoliosis Screening
Scoliosis screenings are typically done during annual school physicals (postural assessment). The screening can be documented on Form DH 3040, School Entry Health Exam or on another health record.
Exemption from Scoliosis Screening
A student is exempt from the requirement of scoliosis screening upon written request of the parent or guardian.
